Virginia Immunization Awareness Month
August is Immunization Awareness Month in Virginia (VIAM). This annual observance emphasizes the importance of protecting yourself and fellow community members against vaccine-preventable diseases. Given recent measles outbreaks across the Commonwealth, the upcoming flu and RSV season, and persisting geographic disparities in vaccination rates, it’s more important now than ever for everyone to get the vaccines available to them. You have the power to protect against vaccine-preventable diseases.

Joint Resolution HJ24
House Joint Resolution 24 (HJ 24), passed by the Virginia General Assembly in 2026, officially designates August as Immunization Awareness Month in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The resolution recognizes the critical role vaccines have played in reducing illness, disability, and death from vaccine-preventable diseases while encouraging Virginians to learn about recommended immunizations and stay up to date throughout every stage of life. By establishing an annual observance, HJ 24 highlights immunization as an essential component of preventive healthcare and public health preparedness.

The designation of Virginia Immunization Awareness Month provides an opportunity for healthcare providers, public health agencies, schools, employers, and community organizations to promote vaccine education and improve access to immunization services. Each August, these partners can encourage families to review immunization records before the start of the school year, remind adults about recommended seasonal and routine vaccines, and raise awareness of the shared responsibility of protecting vulnerable members of the community. HJ 24 establishes a lasting annual recognition that supports ongoing efforts to improve vaccination coverage and strengthen the health of all Virginians.
